Looking after a rhino baby is like looking after a human baby. When you sponsor hand-rearing a baby rhino for $20 — or any amount you can afford — here’s where your money goes to:
- Helping us rescue orphaned calves: When poachers kill mom rhinos, their babies are left vulnerable. They normally stay close to their mothers for up to three years, suckling milk for up to 18 months. After babies are orphaned and rescued, we hand-rear them until they are ready to rejoin the wild.
- Maintaining Rockwood’s new nursery and rehabilitation centre: We recently built our very own nursery and rehabilitation centre so we can look after orphaned baby rhinos 24/7.
- Round-the-clock care: Baby rhinos without their mothers need constant care. And, like a human baby, they need ongoing love, observation and warmth to survive their formative months and years.
- Keeping us stocked up on milk: Baby rhinos need to be bottle-fed every two hours and can drink up to 35 litres of milk a day! Our staff work night and day to ensure the babies receive the right nutrition.
As you can imagine, the financial demand of raising a 60kg baby rhino is substantial. Which is why we need your help to meet these requirements until our rhino orphans are mature enough to return to their families in the wild.
