$150 can support a research project but any amount you can afford to give helps!
When you donate $150 you support one of our scientific research projects, but any amount you can afford to give will make a real difference. Here’s how your money helps:
Lactating mother rhinos are often killed by poachers, leaving the calves to fend for themselves. We hand-rear the orphaned baby rhinos but we are still trying to fully understand the nutritional properties of rhino milk. So our rhino orphans often have digestive and other health issues that require expensive medicine to remedy.
Ensuring our rhinos are born with good genes. DNA veterinary research at Rockwood could help save the endangered Southern white rhino species. Our goal is to achieve healthy genetic diversity within the population of Southern white rhinos in South Africa. But vital DNA research is costly. We need help to fund expensive laboratory equipment, veterinarian fees and other costs.
If rhinos don’t survive, the entire ecosystem will be affected. The rhino is a keystone species, which means other species depend on them for their survival. If a keystone species disappears, it sets off a chain of events that changes the structure and biodiversity of its habitat irrevocably. We are conducting rhino habitat and feeding habit research to ensure we can relocate and repopulate responsibly.
